Very fine particles suspended in the air, called aerosols, are an important component of today's climate and pollution studies. Professor Kim Pratherat UCSD has invented a mass spectrometer that simultaneously measures aerosol size and a spectrum of component ions, fractions of molecules obtained by zapping the particle on the fly with a laser. The spectra vary even for the same type of particles, and the classification of these particles based on their spectrum is a hot field of atmospheric chemistry. Dr. Rebotier worked in particular on differentiating gas and diesel engine aerosols.
