Thomas Rebotier's doctoral work explored hypothetized mechanisms of mental imagery by neural network modeling and psychological experimentation. A model of V1 visual cortex was made of gabor filters of various frequencies, phases and orientation, connected by lateral connections whose strength correspond to the spatial correlation of the connected units. In this model, the attractor dynamics of recirculating activity is able to restore some details of a noised representation. Experimentation validated chosen predictions of the model.
